So the selfridges roof garden is open again - for the first time since 1939! Opened in 1909, it was the perfect place for afternoon tea in London. The roof has had shooting ranges, golf courses, putting green and also hosted a lot of fashion shows. Oh and the shooting range? Was a girls only gun club!!!! WTF!Girls in the 1930s playing golf on the roof top!
It was closed during the war so that the store could grow vegetables for the cafe there. After the store was heavily bombed in 1940 and 1944 causing extensive damage, the owners claimed they would never open the roof top again. The bomb in 1940 blew the top floor windows out showering the streets of London with the glass. (Sorry I'm nerdy about history - I love it) Carrying on in the random tradition of things on the roof, the store has unveiled rowing boats and a roof top cocktail bar.
The architects behind the design have revealed they were inspired by a gondola party in the Savoy in 1905, the courtyard was flooded, boats brought in and elephants. The roof had to be reinforced with tons of steel to hold the lake and Selfridges had to apply for a special boating license!!!
- Oh and should you get into difficulty while boating around? The store now has a lifeguard....well, if you will have cocktails and boats your asking for trouble!
