One of the reasons I think people don't start their projects is that they overestimate how long it is going to take. I do it all the time. People ask me how long something took to paint and I'll say "Oh, 40 hours." It is hard to come up with an accurate number because often I work on projects for an hour for a bunch of sessions. When I sit down and think about it though, it's not 40 one hour sessions, it's usually more like 8-12.
Here however is a project that I underestimated. I thought it would take about 2 hours, but ended up taking 4 hours. My bastard of a gaming partner decided that we should run a game that takes place partially in an orange orchard in Southern Lebanon. To be honest I thought it was a great idea and volunteered to make one to go with the road side stand I have from Deimos Designs (whose owner recently passed away).
So I bought some Woodland Scenics tree armatures (3/4" to 3" assorment), based them on metal washers, bent the armatures into shape and painted and flocked the bases. I didn't want to spend extra money on Hob-E-Tac, and Scenic Glue which is the Woodland Scenics approved method of attaching the clump foliage to the armatures and the oranges to the foliage. I instead used hot glue, a method I've used before, and PVA. Sometimes the glue melted the armatures a little and after awhile the smell started to get to me. Using PVA to attach the oranges didn't go that smoothly either. Sealing them with some Satin spray did manage to improve the look by hiding the shiny nature of the plastic armature, hot glue, and PVA and sealing in the oranges a bit. Frankly the whole thing was tedious. I hope I have enough trees, if not I'll just mix in some regular trees I have to expand the orchard. Total cost, approx $30.

I couldn't find out the average height of the Khetmalli variety of orange tree which grows in Lebanon and Israel, but from pictures I found it seemed to be about 12-16' high. I made up a few different size armatures, but didn't use many of the 3" armatures which would have been closer to 30".
Here's a shot showing an Israeli fire team seeking out some PLO in the orchard. I used a scrap piece of green felt just to get an idea of what it would look like.
